The Diocese of Enugu (Anglican Communion) has issued a communique at the end of its 2nd Session of the 19th Synod, held at St. Paul’s Church, China Town, Enugu.
The Synod, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Samuel Obiajulu Ike, expressed concern over the resurgence of violence and killings in the country, particularly in Benue, Enugu, Plateau, and Imo States.
Key Resolutions
The Synod made the following key resolutions]:
- Creation of State and Community Police: The Synod called on the National Assembly to facilitate the creation of State and Community Police to improve security and prevent destruction of lives and properties.
- Investigation of Security Chiefs: The Synod urged President Bola Tinubu to investigate and prosecute Security and Intelligence Chiefs allegedly complicit in the fight against insecurity and siphoning of funds voted for security.
- Youth Restiveness: The Synod noted the challenge of youth restiveness and the need to prioritize the needs of youths and make efforts to reduce the number of unemployed youths.
Economic Concerns
The Synod also expressed concern over the country’s excessive borrowing, which has reached about 10.1 trillion naira between May 2023 and September 2024.
The Synod urged efforts to stimulate the economy and provide safety nets like subsidies on health, education, and food to cushion the effect of hardship on the populace.
Commendation of Enugu State Government
The Synod commended the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his administration’s efforts in enhancing infrastructure, security, health, and education.
However, the Synod called on the state government to review the multiple taxes that are making lives unbearable for residents of the State.
