The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has raised concerns over the handling of a petition filed by Enugu Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Ngozi Edeani, against Dr. Robert Anya Nkata, a security expert and consultant.
The petition, which alleges an assassination attempt on May 23, 2025, has led to Dr. Nkata’s arrest and detention by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
Abuse of Police Procedure Alleged
RULAAC has accused the police of abusing their procedure by allowing the complainant to bypass local jurisdictions and escalate the matter directly to the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja. This practice, RULAAC argues, undermines discipline, transparency, and due process within the Force.
Suspicious Timing and Motive Questioned
The advocacy group has also questioned the timing of the petition, which was filed five months after the alleged incident. RULAAC suggests that the real motive behind the petition may be connected to a family dispute and a pending EFCC investigation into alleged share manipulation at Mayfresh Mortgage Bank Limited.
Arbitrary Detention Condemned
In a statement issued and signed by Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director, RULAAC has condemned the police for arbitrarily detaining Dr. Nkata, despite the bailable nature of the allegations and the absence of credible evidence linking him to any crime. RULAAC has called for Dr. Nkata’s immediate and unconditional release from detention.
Demands for Action
RULAAC has urged the Inspector-General of Police to order an immediate review of this matter, ensure adherence to due process, and prevent the misuse of the Force by persons of influence.
The group emphasizes the need for the police to act impartially and protect the rights of citizens, irrespective of status or connection.
