A 29-year-old woman, Okonkwo Chisom, has been arraigned before the Magistrate Court of Enugu State for defaming her husband, Okonkwo Ozioma, and providing false information to the police.
Chisom had accused her husband of defiling their two daughters, aged 5 and 3, and threatening to kill her if she disclosed it.
However, investigations by the Enugu State Police Command revealed that the allegations were false and misleading.
It was discovered that Chisom had travelled alone with the children to their hometown in Imo State during the periods she alleged the offences occurred.
The police investigation also uncovered that Chisom’s 7-year-old son had exonerated his father in two separate handwritten statements, claiming that his mother had coached him and his sisters to falsely accuse their father.
Video evidence supported the son’s statements.
Chisom attempted to withdraw the case and stop further police investigation when she realized the truth was emerging, but the police continued with the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the detectives for their thorough and impartial investigation.
Chisom was granted bail by the court, and the case was adjourned for further hearing. The police command warned that any complainant found to have made false or malicious allegations would be prosecuted according to the law.
The Enugu State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to justice, and professionalism in handling all cases.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, emphasized that the police will not tolerate false accusations and will ensure that justice is served.
The case highlights the importance of thorough investigations and the need for individuals to be cautious when making accusations, especially those that can have severe consequences for the accused.
