Objectives of the Training

The training aims to build the capacity of journalists to accurately report public health concerns, Non-communicable Diseases burden in Nigeria, and pro-health policies that prioritize citizens’ wellbeing.

It will also provide practical tools to engage effectively with the media and promote the dissemination of evidence-based information to the public.

Key Topics to be Covered

  • SSB Tax: The training will cover the importance of SSB tax in reducing the consumption of unhealthy foods and drinks.
  • Industry Monitoring: Participants will learn how to identify and counter industry tactics that undermine public health policies.
  • Food Justice: The training will discuss the concept of food justice and its intersection with human rights and social action efforts.

Importance of the Training

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria has surged in recent years, closely correlating with the increased consumption of unhealthy foods, including sugary drinks and processed products.

The media plays a vital role in ensuring that individuals, especially at the grassroots level, are well-informed and not misled by narratives promoted by vested interests in the big food industry.

This training will facilitate knowledge-sharing, enhance advocacy strategies, and empower public health advocates to effectively leverage technology and media platforms for sustained engagement.
