The Founder and Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, Prof. Christian Anieke, has revealed that the institution was established without borrowing a single kobo from any bank or individual.
Anieke made this known during the 17th Founder’s Day Celebration of the university, which is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.
According to Anieke, the university’s establishment is a product of God’s grace and miracle. He explained that unlike other universities that borrowed heavily to establish their institutions, GOUNI was built without any loans.
“A lot of institutions owed a lot of money from banks to establish their universities, but GOUNI did not owe anyone to start,” he said.
Anieke highlighted the university’s achievements since its inception, noting that it received its license to operate in record time.
“Within two years of existence, the university received its license to operate, which was the fastest in the history of the National Universities Commission (NUC),” he said.
The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to God for the progress the university has made, from starting with just 250 students to growing into a multitude of intellectually gifted students.
“So when we celebrate this university, we celebrate God’s special grace and miracle on earth,” he said.
Anieke also noted that the university has grown from two faculties to several, with students excelling in academics and competitions. He emphasized that the university’s mission is to change the pace of higher education in Enugu and Nigeria, and that they are gradually achieving this goal.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Obi Ozor, delivered the 17th Founder’s lecture, urging students to summon the courage to transform their visions into reality. He emphasized the importance of resilience, hard work, creativity, and innovation in achieving success.
Ozor also encouraged students to take responsibility for their lives and not blame others for their failures. “Begin from a little, and you will get to where you want to go,” he advised.
In a goodwill message, former Ohanaeze Ndigbo Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, lauded the university’s achievements and urged students to emulate the resilience of the Vice Chancellor and other successful individuals.
Ogbonnia praised the university for its commitment to academic excellence and character formation. He expressed confidence that the university would continue to produce graduates who would make a positive impact in society.
