Enugu State Government has reiterated its commitment to fostering a robust partnership with the legal community to enhance governance and judicial reforms. Speaking at a distinguished gathering of legal professionals, Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kingsley Tochi Udeh, conveyed greetings from His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, himself a member of the Enugu Bar, acknowledging the invaluable support from his colleagues throughout his election, transition, and governance.
Speaking during the event, the Hon AG emphasized that the state under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Peter Mbah, is rapidly transforming into Nigeria’s hub for knowledge sharing and learning, citing the completion of the International Conference Center as a key step toward positioning Enugu as a center for legal and academic events. He expressed optimism that the Nigerian Bar Association’s Annual General Conference will be hosted in the state in 2026.
The event, which is the 4th Annual Lecture convened by Ikeazor Akaraiwe (SAN) & Associates, brought together members of the legal profession to discuss critical & topical legal issues. This year’s lecture, with topic: Per Incuriam Reagitata: Nigeria’s Superiority Rule for Regulating Divergent Supreme Court Decisions: was delivered by Prof. R.A.C.E Achara.
The AG emphasized the need for legislative and procedural reforms to address inconsistencies in judicial precedents especially of the Supreme Court, suggesting that clear constitutional provisions or procedural rules could offer the much-needed clarity.
Beyond legal reforms, the Enugu State Government reaffirmed its openness to ideas, contributions, and feedback from the legal profession and the general public on optimizing good governance and performance. With key government positions—including the Governor, Deputy Governor, Chief of Staff, and the Attorney General—occupied by lawyers, the administration aims to set a precedent for effective governance driven by legal expertise.
In line with its commitment to judicial efficiency, the government announced the ongoing automation of the justice sector and a comprehensive revision of Enugu State laws. A bill has been submitted to the House of Assembly for the appointment of a law revisor. The exercise will offer an opportunity for stakeholders to propose amendments and corrections to existing legislation.
The HAG encouraged broader participation in governance, emphasizing the administration’s accessibility through virtual platforms and digital communication channels, in addition to physical access. He called for continued collaboration between the government and the legal community to ensure that Enugu State remains a model for legal and administrative excellence.
The event concluded with a resounding call for unity and collective effort in driving Enugu’s development, reinforcing the role of the legal profession in shaping the state’s future.
