The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has announced a significant reduction in electricity tariff for Band A customers in Enugu State. According to the new tariff order, Band A customers will now pay N160 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), down from N209/kWh. This change will take effect on August 1, 2025.
How the New Tariff Works
The EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, explained that the commission reviewed MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited’s tariff and license applications, using the Tariff Methodology Regulations 2024 and Distribution Tariff Model. This review resulted in an average price of N94, which is lower due to the federal government’s subsidy on electricity generation costs. The subsidy reduces the actual cost of N112 to N45.
Impact on Customers
Band A Customers
- Will pay N160/kWh, a reduction from N209/kWh
- Will enjoy a guaranteed 20 hours of electricity supply daily
Bands B, C, D, and E Customers
- Tariffs will remain frozen
- No changes in their electricity costs
Monitoring and Evaluation
The EERC has put in place monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure MainPower’s compliance with service commitments. This includes:
- Publishing daily reports on the average daily hours of supply on each Band A feeder
- Downgrading feeders that fail to meet committed service levels for seven consecutive days
Sustainability Concerns
The EERC Chairman noted that the N160 Band A tariff might be difficult to sustain if the federal government removes the generation tariff subsidy. If this happens, tariffs could rise beyond the new rates.
